A Parent's Guide to Primary Schools in Culcheth

A Parent's Guide to Primary Schools in Culcheth

For many families, buying a home and choosing a primary school are decisions that happen at exactly the same time.

Where you live determines which schools you can realistically apply for, and in a village like Culcheth, where primary school places are genuinely sought after, that link between postcode and school place is something every parent needs to understand before they sign anything.

Here at Courtyard Homes, we talk to families about this constantly. So we've put together a clear, honest guide to the three primary schools serving Culcheth, what Ofsted says about each of them, what makes them distinct, and what you need to know about admissions before you move.

How Primary Admissions Work in Culcheth
All three primary schools in Culcheth are community schools administered by Warrington Borough Council (with one recent change, which we'll come to shortly). Applications for Reception places are made through Warrington Council's coordinated admissions process, with the main deadline falling in January each year for September entry.

The oversubscription criteria for community primary schools in Warrington prioritise, in order: looked-after children, siblings of children already attending the school, and then proximity to the school. That final criterion, distance, is what makes your postcode so important. If a school is oversubscribed, the council measures the straight-line distance from your home to the school gate, and places are offered to the closest applicants first.

In practice, this means that for popular schools, the cut-off distance varies year by year depending on how many sibling applications come in. If you're buying in Culcheth specifically for a school place, it's worth checking the most recent admissions data for the school you have in mind, not just assuming that being in the village means you'll get in. We can help you do that for any specific address.

Twiss Green Community Primary School
Twiss Green Lane, Culcheth, WA3 4DQ | Ages 4 to 11 | approx. 205 pupils
Twiss Green sits at the southern end of the village on Twiss Green Lane and is widely regarded as one of the most popular primary schools in the Warrington area. It was rated Outstanding by Ofsted twice, in 2007 and again in 2009, and has maintained a Good rating at subsequent inspections, most recently at a full inspection in November 2023 when it was graded Good across all categories including quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision.

Academically, Twiss Green performs well above the national average. At Key Stage 2, 84% of pupils achieved the higher standard in reading, writing, and maths, compared to a national average considerably lower than that. That is a genuinely strong result, and it reflects the school's consistent focus on outcomes alongside the broader development of each child.
The school has around 205 pupils across seven year groups, giving it a pupil-to-teacher ratio of approximately 17:1, which is favourable for a state primary. Its location on Twiss Green Lane, at the southern edge of the village towards Croft, means it draws primarily from that part of Culcheth. Families in the northern parts of the village, nearer to Warrington Road, may find they fall outside the typical catchment distance in competitive years.
The school does not have a nursery attached, so parents of younger children will need to make separate provision for pre-school care.

Newchurch Community Primary School
Glebeland, Culcheth, WA3 4DX | Ages 4 to 11 | approx. 194 pupils
Newchurch sits on Glebeland in the heart of the village and was most recently inspected by Ofsted in October 2024, under the new inspection framework that no longer gives a single overall effectiveness grade. Inspectors rated the school Good for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, leadership and management, and early years provision. For personal development, Newchurch was rated Outstanding.

That Outstanding rating for personal development is worth dwelling on. Ofsted's report notes that pupils' personal development is exceptional, describing how the school's curriculum leaves nothing to chance when it comes to preparing children for the wider world. From online safety to financial management to mental health, inspectors found that pupils were exceptionally well prepared for secondary school. The report describes pupils as having wonderful manners, impressive behaviour, and a genuine sense of responsibility within the school community. Older pupils eagerly take on leadership roles including young governors and mental health ambassadors.

The school describes itself as a family, and the Ofsted report echoes that. Almost every parent who completed the Ofsted Parent View survey said they would recommend the school to others. Attendance is above the national average, which inspectors noted reflects the positive attitudes pupils have towards school.
Newchurch also has a nursery on site, which is managed by a private provider, making it a practical option for families with younger children who want continuity from nursery through to Year 6.

Culcheth Community Primary School (Now Part of One Community Trust)
Warrington Road, Culcheth, WA3 5HH | Ages 4 to 11
This school went through a significant change in 2024. The original Culcheth Community Primary School closed as a local authority community school on 31 August 2024 and reopened as an academy under One Community Trust from 1 September 2024. The school continues to operate from the same site on Warrington Road in the northern part of the village and the transition to academy status does not affect its catchment geography or the day-to-day experience of most families.
The school's most recent Ofsted inspection as a community school took place in May 2023, and the school was delighted with the result, describing it as cause for celebration on their website. The full graded inspection that was expected to follow within 12 to 18 months did not take place before conversion to academy status, so Ofsted ratings under the new structure are awaited.

The school is located on Warrington Road at the northern end of the village, making it the most natural option for families in that part of Culcheth. It has an active PTA, runs a range of extracurricular activities, and places a clear emphasis on wellbeing, with the school's Wellbeing Warriors programme among the community-facing initiatives it has developed in recent years.
As an academy, admissions are now handled by One Community Trust rather than directly by Warrington Council, though the school still participates in the local coordinated admissions scheme. If you are applying for a place at this school it is worth confirming the current admissions policy directly with the trust.

St Lewis Catholic Primary School
Mustard Lane, Croft, WA3 7BD | Ages 3 to 11
While not within the village of Culcheth itself, St Lewis Catholic Primary in the neighbouring village of Croft is worth mentioning for Catholic families living in Culcheth. The school is a voluntary aided Catholic primary serving the wider parish area, and Culcheth falls within its catchment geography. Admissions at St Lewis prioritise Catholic children in the parish, followed by other Christian denominations, and then other families by distance. If faith education is important to your family, this is the local option to investigate.

What Does This Mean When You're Buying?
The honest answer is that school admissions in Culcheth are competitive, particularly for Twiss Green and Newchurch, both of which have strong reputations and limited capacity. Sibling links account for a significant proportion of places each year, which can reduce the number of open distance places available for new families moving into the area.
This does not mean it's impossible to get a place at your preferred school as a new resident. It does mean that if you have a particular school in mind, you should check the most recent admissions data for that school, understand where your address sits relative to the typical cut-off distance, and if necessary, speak to Warrington Council's admissions team before you commit to a property.

Where Courtyard Homes can help is in identifying which properties sit closest to each school and understanding the patterns we see year to year from the families we work with in the village. If you're weighing up two properties and school proximity matters, that's a conversation we're very happy to have.

Culcheth is one of the best-served villages in the Warrington area for primary education. Three schools, each with their own distinct character, all within the village boundaries, all performing well by Ofsted's measures and by the evidence of the children who come through their doors. For families, that combination of quality and choice is a genuine selling point, and it's one of the main reasons Culcheth remains one of the most sought-after places to buy a family home in this part of Cheshire.
