Bike Week 2025: Why Not Start or Get Back into Cycling?

Bike Week 2025: Why Not Start or Get Back into Cycling?

Cycling is healthy, environmentally friendly and can save you money too. With Bike Week 2025 starting on Monday (June 9), now is the perfect time to get started or get back in the saddle.

1. Think about why you want to cycle

This is a vital first step to help you choose the most suitable bike for your needs.

If you’re a would-be racer or plan to do longer rides or triathlons, go for something lightweight.

Leisure cyclists should consider a bike with all-terrain capability, as this will offer more route options.

If you plan on commuting or using your bike to go shopping, choose a model that can hold a basket or panniers.

Dyed-in-the-wool cyclists might tell you that an electrically-assisted bike is cheating. But they can be an attractive option, especially for older people or if you live in a hilly area.

2. Don’t spend big at first

Think about buying a used bike. Check out local listings and Facebook Marketplace.

Used is an especially good option if you want to get your kids into cycling, as they will quickly grow out of whatever size of bike you buy now.

If you’re concerned about safety when buying a second-hand bike, many cycle shops offer safety checks either free or for a small charge.

There’s no need to spend a lot on kit either. At a minimum, you’ll need a helmet, comfortable shorts or leggings, and a waterproof jacket.

3. Consider joining a cycling group

Riding with others on a group ride-out is much more fun than solo cycling.

Groups can also offer advice on the best routes, tips on maintenance and repairs and may also provide cycling training.

The secret is finding a group that revolves around the type of cycling you want. Some groups cater to serious competitors, while others are ideal for leisure cyclists.

Cycling UK has a directory listing more than 1,000 groups across the UK that cater for all types of riding and abilities: www.cyclinguk.org/local-groups.
