If you have a garden and you live in the WA3 area, you are genuinely well placed. Within a short drive there is one of the most visited garden centres in the country, a well-established local nursery, and a farm-based plant centre that most people combine with a breakfast stop. Here is what each one offers and what to expect.
Bents Garden and Home, Glazebury
Bents is on the doorstep. Founded in 1937 by Alfred and Margaret Bent, who began by selling home-grown roses from the front garden of their terraced house in Glazebury, it has grown into one of the largest and most visited garden centres in the UK, attracting over a million visitors a year. It is now run by the third generation of the family under Managing Director Matthew Bent and his sisters.
There is an all-weather Open Skies Glass House for outdoor plants, seven dining destinations serving food throughout the day, an adventure play area for children, and a home and lifestyle section that goes well beyond garden equipment. The Fresh Approach Restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients and has won awards for its food.
If you are going for plants and a browse, a weekday morning is considerably quieter than a Saturday afternoon. The plant selection and quality are consistently praised, as is the knowledgeable staff in the horticultural sections.
Primrose Hill Nursery, High Legh
Primrose Hill Nursery sits on the A50 just past Lymm Services, around 15 minutes from Culcheth. It is a proper traditional nursery rather than a lifestyle destination, focused on quality plants at reasonable prices including bedding plants, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, and seasonal stock. The nursery grows some of its own stock, which tends to mean healthier plants and knowledgeable staff. Reviewers specifically mention the quality of the plants and the reasonable pricing. The nursery does not have a website and is best followed on Facebook for seasonal updates.
Kenyon Hall Farm Plant Centre, Croft
Kenyon Hall Farm runs a plant centre and garden shop alongside its farm shop, cafe, and pick-your-own operation. The plant stock focuses on bedding plants, shrubs, and seasonal planting, all produced to farm standards. It is not a destination garden centre in the Bents mould, but combined with the farm shop and breakfast cafe it makes for a practical and enjoyable half-morning out, particularly if you have children in tow.
The farm's own produce, including freshly baked bread, eggs, and seasonal fruit and vegetables, is available in the shop next door.
