How Often Brits Move: Insight for Warrington Homeowners

While some people only move a few times in their lives, for others it’s a very different story.

When it comes to moving home, how typical are you?

Are you the restless type who ups sticks every few years?

Or have you been settled in the same property for decades and have no intention of moving again, ever?
To find out how you compare with the rest of the country, take a look at the results of a new survey on how frequently people move.

The platform Compare My Move asked 2,000 people about their moving history, and this is what it found.
Respondents who had moved:
  • Two or three times: 29%
  • Four to six times: 32%
  • Seven to nine times: 15%
  • Ten to 12 times: 7%
  • More than 12 times: 7%.

Overall, the survey found that the average Brit moves six times in their life.
The most common reasons for moving were downsizing, upsizing and lifestyle change.
Only 3% of moves were employment related.
How have things changed?
It’s often suggested in the media that society today is more transient.
However, a glance back at past statistics reveals a different picture.
Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast found that the number of people moving home has been declining since the 1970s.
An analysis of Census data found that around a million fewer people moved house in the 2000s than in the 1970s.
Interestingly, a similar trend was also recorded in countries such as Australia, the US and Germany.

So what’s behind this shift?
The researchers attributed the change to several factors, including a shortage in housing stock and rising prices.
Also, young adults tend to stay in the family home for longer.
The ageing of the population also has implications, as older people tend to move less.

Finding your forever home
The fact that we move less frequently nowadays means that when we do decide to relocate, the stakes can seem ever higher.
That’s why it’s crucial to work with a reputable agent when listing your current property.
They can guide you through the process, advise you on the latest marketing strategies, handle negotiations and minimise stress.

Birchwood continues to be one of the most active and accessible parts of Warrington's property market.

One of the things people genuinely appreciate about living in this part of Warrington and the wider WA3 area is how much green space sits on the doorstep. You don't need to drive an hour to find a decent walk.

Spring is the best time of year to sell a family home, and gardens are a big part of why.

Drive through Birchwood today and you pass a business park, a forest park, a residential area, and a series of roads named after trees. It is quietly unremarkable in the way that most modern developments are.
